India’s pharmaceuticals industry is rapidly growing as a key sunrise sector of the economy, poised to grow at a CAGR of 14.5 per cent until 2020 to reach USD 55 billion. The generic drugs account for as much as a whooping 20 per cent of the global exports in terms of volume. However, counterfeiting remains a big menace for the Indian pharma industry leading not only to huge revenue losses but also denting the brand and reputation, while at the same time posing grave health risks to the patient.

While Industry is constantly endeavoring to fight Counterfeiting, Government and Regulatory measures are also underway with the Union Health Ministry contemplating to reform and amend the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 to match the current regulatory requirements related to patient safety, efficacy and quality of drugs, medical devices and cosmetics, and at the same time the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation is considering stricter punishment for violation of guidelines.
